Retrieving Full Articles

AutoBlogged Support

Perhaps one of the most frequent questions we get asked is if AutoBlogged can get the full post in the RSS feed rather than just an excerpt. The answer is that autoblogged can only use what the feed provides so if the RSS feed only shows partial content, as most feeds do, that is all that AutoBloged can use.

By default, AutoBlogged will create a small text-only excerpt from the content in the RSS feed, will attribute the source, and link to the original article. It will also include a thumbnail of the first image found in the post if one exists. A small excerpt, a thumbnail, and attribution is largely considered fair use and we consider it a proper courtesy to those who are are actually writing or own the content you are taking. Taking the full articles from someone else's site without their consent just isn't cool and is likely to get your site marked as spam and could also lead to duplicate content penalties from search engines.

Having said that, there are times when it is appropriate to take the full content or you have the owner's consent to do so. In those cases, we recommend using Yahoo Pipes, wizardrss.com, fullfeeds.org, fullrssfeed.com, getfullrss.com, or fivefilters.org to create full content RSS feeds that you can use with AutoBlogged.

UPDATE: Here is the recommended method for getting full text feeds:

http://community.autoblogged.com/entries/20242822-getting-full-text...

We also have an experimental addon called ab-fullcontent that will grab the full contents of an article:

https://github.com/AutoBlogged/AutoBlogged-Addons

Excerpts

Note that the excerpt that AutoBlogged uses is text-only also for security purposes as people have been known to exploit autoblogs for malicious purposes.

Most RSS feeds from blogs only include an excerpt in the feed and this is the default setting for most blogging platforms such as WordPress. AutoBlogged can only work with the content that is in the feed itself, so if the feed only contains excerpts that's all you get. You can view the contents of a feed by using our feed viewer at http://viewer.autoblogged.com/.

Occasionally some feeds do contain full content, and in that case you can access the full article by using the %content% or %content:encoded% variables in your post template (depending on how the feed is formatted).

We do recommend that you get permission to use the full feed to avoid any legal troubles and to not give autobloggers a bad name.

Excerpt Length

AutoBlogged will let you control the length of the excerpts it makes. Under the Settings admin panel there is a section for Excerpts that lets you specify a minimum and maximum number of words, sentences, or paragraphs.

Of course, this excerpt is based on the contents of the feed so it can only work with what the feed provides.

Update:  We plan to have an add-in in version 3.x that will allow for retrieving full posts.

Yes the full post is a necessity.  I plan on giving full authorship to the source and really wish this option becomes available shortly.

Furthermore combing feeds with yahoo pipes and then sending it thru a full feed reader and then grabbing that feed does not work.  I get error messages constantly.  When I do get a feed it only send me Yahoo Pipes ; not the combined feeds that I am putting them thru.

One year is already passed and nothing is changed. If I more carefully read this forum before the purchase I will never bought Autoblogged. I don not know is it a joy to keep your customers in  deep problems but i have a good expirience with Foobla RSS on my Joomla sites as well as with http://kansieo.com/demo/  I don't think that this guys more smarter than Autoblogged team but...

That was I mean. I'm already  did it - installed ab-fullcontent addon as described in readme, activated , and nothing is happened. There is no "* @todo Add an option page under the main AutoBlogged page" or any changes.I'm even try to add some new feeds from validated RSS  with full articles but it working in old way.

AutoBlogged cut everything (even excerpts - 500 words). IMHO when you buy an iron you have to use it not research or develop.

Igor, try using %content% in your post template. That is an experimental plugin and that is why it is not part of our main product.

We never advertised that our product takes full articles, we advertise that it takes the content of RSS feeds. But still we have provided that add-on for free because our v3 release has been delayed. One of the reasons we don't offer this as a feature is because it is impossible to make it work for every site out there.

By the way you criticize us that a year has passed since that announcement, Dec 3, 2010 is actually just over 4 months ago.

"Yes, if you buy an iron you don't have to research it but if you want to steal someone's web content it does get a bit more complicated."

Right now we are talking about RSS with  FULL articles from one MY web site to another.

And your product doesn't work without research or solution search as expected from you advertising:

"Automatically converts RSS feeds into WordPress posts
Includes attached images and videos"

In that case you have to write "Automatically converts UNEXPECTED PART from RSS feeds into WordPress posts"  :)

The best thing would be to open a support ticket with your feed details and we can check to see if there is something about that particular feed that is causing problems.
